Large Folio. 398 x 271mm. Pulpit Bible. A4, B4, D4, [2]A-Z, 2A-4M5. Lacks 4M6 & 4N 1-4. 503 [of 508] leaves. Contemporary paste-boards, calf stripped from covers, remnants of brass claps, corners rounded, rebacked in leather, rubbed, hinge reinforced with metal strip; 4M1 loose, creased, with tears and some minor loss, C3 & 4 trimmed and loose and N3 & 4 disbound, final two signatures partly disbound, small chips to lower outer corner of most leaves, a few stray marks, some minor corner worming, generally internally clean. Provenence: "Frilsham Berkes (shire)" on t.p., (The small village of Frilsham lies six miles from Newbury. It is on the River Pang). 2 T.p.s. in woodcut border representing the 12 tribes. Calender in red and black; head-pieces & fine decorated initials. The "true" 1613 edition is distinguishable from the other folios by its smaller type in the Bible text 72 lines instead of 59. A monument in the history of the Bible in English, the King James Version was first printed in 1611 (the 'He' Bible) and then reprinted in 1611-1613 (the 'She' Bible). In 1613 this new edition appeared with more lines to the page. It is famous for the fineness of the typography but later editions of these pulpit Bibles followed the first editions in having 59 lines.
